2021.09.27 09:10 Negative_Thanks_910 Who is the most underrated band of the 70s?
u/GiantPretzel did this question first but I want to ask it for each of the decades. The ones I'm best at are 60s and 70s though. Criteria are as normal, artists who were, and still are, commercially/critically (or both) under appreciated by people generally, even within the music community.
I have a lot I think but the first ones that come to mind are Eric Burdon & War and the Flamin' Groovies. Although generally the War catalog is looked over, I never see people, especially music nerds, recognizing how great their first records with Eric Burdon are. Especially the Black Man's Burdon. And Flamin' Groovies didn't necessarily ever make a great whole album, but they have great songs in their discography and were one of the Stones imitation bands that got close to them in quality (with New York Dolls). Definitely better than Aerosmith, imo.

2021.09.27 09:10 Ok_Journalist_6810 "The Conner Gene" is a repudiation of one of the original show's core values
Like many folks on this sub, I looked forward to the Season 4 premiere - a live episode, no less - with a lot of anticipation. I loved a lot of it - Jackie had some great moments, and Louise continues to add a lot to the mix - but two elements of the episode - and its broader implications on the Roseanne/Conners mythology on a whole - really got to me. I hope I'm not the only one:
a) The silly, condescending, and patronizing notion of a "Conner Gene" that predisposes its unfortunate host to a lifetime of misfortune, lost opportunities, and a complete inability to compete on a level playing field with the rest of the world.
Yes, the classic series made reference to relatives of Dan's that had a more checkered past, and who the family actively avoided ("I Pray Thee Lord My Stove To Keep"), but - to me - one of the show's most core lessons is the notion that, despite challenges, setbacks, and systemic disadvantages, it was possible (and, laudable) to continually try and better your lot in life: not only for yourself and your spouse, but also - perhaps even more importantly - for your children. (Recall Roseanne's closing monologue in "Into That Good Night, Part II", and its reference to an objective improvement of even fifty percent in quality of life being the metric for "total success" as a parent).
For me, one of the mythology's primary lessons is this: life can get hard, the idiots and mundanes and outright malevolent people in the world might grind you down - but you never stop striving to overcome it all. The family's seeming gleeful acceptance of fate in 2021 feels cynical and dispirited in comparison - though I realize that the years between 1997 and 2021 have certainly taken their toll.
b) Darlene embracing religion? This just feels like an outright character betrayal. Darlene Conner has always been a champion of skepticism, of charting one's own course, and of questioning authority. Beyond this being such an embodiment of her Gen-X-era perspective and makeup as a character, it also made her a wonderful foil for Becky - and tellingly reminiscent of Roseanne's own fierce independence. Don't just accept what people in self-appointed positions of authority convey. Never settle for mediocrity. Test, measure, evaluate, and determine for yourself. Listen to what you need. And then, if the evidence begins to suggest otherwise, discard your biases with courage and continue accordingly.
This is the spirit of brave inquiry that got Roseanne and her friends out of Wellman Plastics. It's what enabled her to be such a strong rock for her family. It's what got Darlene into writing school, and - presumably - through the bitter pain of her marriage's collapse in the 2000s. Darlene Conner, as written and expressed, was a credible and convincing advocate for secularism and skepticism. To have her abandon these principles on the vague advice of a "psychic" she'd known for all of ten minutes simply doesn't align with what we know of this character, her history, and her makeup.
Apologies for the mini-essay. I love these characters, and believe that they continue to have incredible meaning, relevance, and stories to tell. I've invested 25 years into them, and I'll never stop watching. And I get that the world is, generally, a more cynical place than it was back in the 90s. But, despite that - I believe that these characters deserve better.

2021.09.27 09:10 exedore_us REVIEW: LISN Line Intro + #059 Natty
So here we go, starting on the LISN samplers.
Before I go into what'll ultimately be a pretty short first impression, I want to take a second to cover expectations. From what I can glean - and this might be wildly innacurate - LISN, like Xiang Do, isn't meant to be a particularly deep, meditative incense experience. I'm basing this theory on the presentation, the image, and especially the form factor. Both LISN and Xiang Do sticks are thicker than your usual Japanese incense, but they're also short and burn through in 15-20 minutes. Enough time to get a good hit of something, but not long enough to become cloying or overdo it. Despite the name, I genuinely don't think users are meant to spend a long time listening with full intent and they're definitely not for traditional or ceremonial uses. Rather, they're meant to make your room smell nice and be pleasant. And I am 100% OK with that (otherwise I wouldn't have bought them).
So some notes on the packaging as well. Regular boxes of LISN are small and pyramidal with the sticks rapped in a layer of gauze. The samplers are a wooden base with card overlays to tell you what everything is and the key scent description. The pack-in holders are supposed to be biodegradable and kept away from water, which makes me want to run one under the sink but maybe next time. I'd say it's environmentally friendly except for the plastic sheet on top of the sticks and the rigid plastic slipcase which is a pain to reclose thanks to some annoyingly tight tabs.
Anyway, you're here for a scent and this isn't a cooking blog looking to raise its SEO.
I'm starting with the Classical imprint sampler - maybe not the best choice for trying out where this can go, but at 8:30AM, it seems like a gentle way to start the morning.
Natty (#059) is listed as "Sandalwood" for its scent. And it smells like...a more intense version of Autumn Leaves. You get the Shoyeido sweet base when first lighting the stick, then the wood kicks in after a minute or two, and then a couple more minutes later it settles into a slightly spiced and very sweet caramelly scent with woody tones and stays there for the rest of the burn. It's not going to be exciting or new for any regulars here, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Is it a nice way to start the morning? Yes. Is it worth paying the import premium when you can find Autumn Leaves or other standard Japanese sandalwood/spice blends all over the place at a reasonable price? No. But I have two more sticks in the sampler (why, Lisn, why give me three of this but only one of some others?) and will gladly burn them both.
